Electrical Troubleshooting

What this actually involves

Most electrical faults look the same from the outside — something stopped working. The cause underneath is rarely obvious, and swapping parts until it goes away is how a small problem turns into an expensive one. Tracing a fault properly means testing the circuit under load, checking terminations, and isolating the branch before anything gets replaced.

Scope

What we handle

Breakers that keep tripping. A breaker doing its job is a symptom, not the fault. We find what is drawing the current.

Dead outlets and half-working circuits. Usually a loose termination or a tripped GFCI further up the line.

Flickering or dimming lights. Can be a loose neutral, a failing connection, or a load problem at the panel.

Burning smells and scorch marks. Stop using the circuit and call. This one is not a wait-until-Monday problem.

Buzzing panels or switches. A sound from a panel is worth looking at the same day.

Circuits that fail intermittently. The hardest kind to catch, and the reason we test rather than guess.

Questions

Straight answers

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Because it is doing what it was built to do — cutting power when a circuit draws more current than it is rated for, or when there is a short or a ground fault. Resetting it over and over does not fix the cause and puts heat into the panel. The useful question is what changed on that circuit.

Is a burning smell an emergency?

Yes. Stop using the circuit, switch that breaker off if you can do it safely, and call. A burning smell near an outlet, switch or panel means something is overheating, and overheating is how electrical fires start. We take emergency calls 24 hours a day across Kane and DuPage County.

Can you find a fault without tearing open my walls?

Usually. Testing at the panel and at accessible outlets and junctions narrows a fault down to one branch before anything gets opened up. Sometimes access is unavoidable, but it is the last step, not the first.

Do you work outside normal hours?

Yes — emergency service is available 24/7. Regular scheduled work runs Monday to Friday.
